R&B/Dub organ trio gives 2 performances at Lamberts 10/15 and 11/7
The Finest Kind is a dub-style R&B trio. The band features Rolf Ordahl on a 1958 Hammond M3 organ. Rolf learned to play piano from his father in Manhattan and toured the east coast for years before coming to Austin. Bassist Ross Alexander brought his goods to our fair city all the way from the Virgin Islands. Ross is also the producer of experimental electronica/dub project Just Joy. Alex Marrero joins The Finest Kind on drums. You may know him from Topaz & Mudphonic. When these guys get together, they create un-ignorable booty-shaking grooves.
Earlier this month, The Finest Kind fetched some astounding reviews for their performance with songstress Erin Ivey at the Long Center. They absolutely do not disappoint.
Thursday, October 15th at Lambert's (401 W 2nd St)
The Finest Kind at 12:00am
Saturday, November 7th at Lambert's (401 W 2nd St)
The Finest Kind at 12:00am
We’ll get the party started at 12 midnight both nights. If you want a two-fer: pianist Eddy Hobizal plays at 10:30pm on Thursday, October 15 and 9:30pm on Saturday, November 7.
Check out this clip of The Finest Kind warming up at soundcheck: BEHIND THE SCENES .

ANNOUNCING
FUNKFEST IV - SAT NOV 21, 2009! FunkyBatz presents the fourth annual
FunkFest to be held at The Parish in Austin TX.
We are thrilled to bring back each and every year: The Stanton Moore Trio feat. Robert Walter & Will Bernard.
Straight out of the studio they will be performing new music off their
soon to be released CD/DVD! This trio continues to produce notably one
of the best live music performances you will experience. Moore's
off-the-hook drumming groove brings together the songwriting of Greyboy
Allstar's acclaimed organ player Robert Walter and Grammy nominated
guitarist Will Bernard into a frenzy of funk that you only need
to witness once to know the truth...
For the first time in the ATX we bring you Garage A Trois. a collaboration between four of the most visionary improvisers of the time: Skerik on saxophones, Mike Dillon on vibes, Marco Benevento on keys and Stanton Moore on drums.
And while improvisation is at the heart of what the quartet has staked
its reputation upon at their legendary New Orleans Jazzfest sets and
rare, but in demand, club tours, it's the intricate sonic tapestries,
tightly orchestrated arrangements, refined melodies and positively
modern approach to instrumental songwriting that's at the heart of
their upcoming long-player, Power Patriot. Read more...

One of my goals with Austinjazz.net is to help other people understand how jazz music can influence all forms of music. Patrick Kennedy is a local session drummer who plays regularly in Opposite Day , a self-described "art-pop" band that is unquestionably influenced by Pat's jazz background. I've seen this group a few times and I highly recommend anyone who's into progressive music to check them out! Pat also teaches music over at Webb Middle School located in east Austin. We sat down at Genuine Joe's to talk about it all. Take a listen to us and the wonderful ambient traffic noise right here.

Piano entertainer Matt Wilson brings high-energy show to The Amsterdam
Austin - Piano entertainer Matt Wilson's career has led him from playing piano in his father's church, to performing on Broadway and touring as the lead in Billy Joel's "Movin' Out," to a performance at the Sydney Olympics. He delivers a more intimate performance at The Amsterdam, 121 W. 8th Street, Wednesday, October 14, at 8:00 p.m. (No cover.) Wilson's band includes Greg Williams on sax, Matt Muehling on guitar, Steve Zirkel on vocals and bass, Laura Mordecai on vocal and percussion and Mike Kopp on drums. The high-energy show includes originals and covers ranging from classic rock 'n roll to rollicking blues and country.
Known locally for his recent performances at the Tribeza Style Week fashion show at the Long Center, Zach Scott Theater, Tex Arts and the Spicewood Arts Society, Wilson is a native of Dallas, and graduate of the University of Texas. His music career started early when he played drums and piano in church where his father, a former missionary who traveled the world, was the pastor and played the organ. Growing up with lots of gospel and oldies, like Jerry Lee Lewis, influenced his sound, which combines rock 'n roll, country and R&B.
After writing music and producing demos while playing at local clubs during college, Wilson landed a contract performing at Disney World. "It was like getting a masters in rock 'n roll performance," he says of the three-year stint. He then returned to Austin for a residency at the Ivory Cat Tavern on Sixth Street.
Wilson's life soon changed dramatically when he won the audition for the lead in Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp's musical "Movin' Out." He moved to New York in the fall of 2003 and toured with the show through 2005.
"Playing the music of one of the major influences of my career, to crowds of thousands was incredible," Wilson said.
But of the many experiences Wilson's had, what he loves most is connecting people to music. A renowned entertainer, audience members usually find themselves singing along, thoroughly engaged in the performance.
When asked about his music Wilson says, "I'm blessed to get to make music for a living and move people with the joy of music, lift their spirits and truly entertain them."
