Brian McNerney, grad student at UT Austin, sent me information about Jazz in the Stacks a lecture from Edward Meyer, local jazz historian. Here's more info from Brian:
I am sending this to a selected number of local members of the Austin community with whom I have corresponded regarding our upcoming lecture at St. Edwards University, The Ragsdale Center's Mabee Ballroom B, on Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
This event is being hosted in conjunction with the Society of American Archivists "Archives Week" events, which this year focus on music-related archival activities under the rubric "Archives City Limits." Austin has a uniquely vibrant music culture, and we believe jazz plays a key role here, alongside all the other musical forms that fill the city's venues nightly. The donation of 2300 jazz LPs from the 1920s-1950s, by Edward N. Meyer, a teacher of the History of Jazz, affords us an opportunity to focus on some particular highlights. Edward Meyer will speak Tuesday evening, and will be followed by Michael Tarabulski, the founder and former chief archivist of the Center for International Jazz Collections at the University of Idaho. Between the two of them, we hope we can appeal to a wide range of interests, from the novice music collector or jazz enthusiast to the highly technically-inclined archivist or music historian.
One of my own objectives in this pursuit is to encourage and define a local jazz community, the community not just of audience members at an average Elephant Room evening's entertainment, but people involved in the music in a cross-section of interest. Everyone I am sending this too fits that description, and I hope to meet you if at all possible. If not, please know that I hope that perhaps some later opportunity might arise to do so, since I believe this lecture event is the start of building a jazz consciousness in the city, not its endpoint.
Thank you, and to those of you who have offered help, guidance, encouragement, etc., thanks even more.
Brian C. McNerney
Graduate Student, University of Texas at Austin School of Information
Intern and Jazz Digitization Project Coordinator, St. Edwards University
