TEXAS NATIVE TRUMPETER ROY HARGROVE RETURNS TO DA CAMERA JAZZ SERIES
Houston, TX, March 4, 2009 – The adventurous jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove returns to Da Camera of Houston’s 08/09 Jazz Series on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 8:00 PM in the Cullen Theater of the Wortham Theater Center. Hargrove is joined by his quintet featuring Justin Robinson, alto saxophone; Alan Palmer, piano; Danton Boller, bass and Montez Coleman, drums. Hargrove’s latest CD is Earfood.
Despite Roy Hargrove’s many accomplishments, including two Grammy Awards, he does not rest on his laurels. “I never get comfortable. You should always be at a point to where you’re striving to get better,” Hargrove tells Rick Mitchell in Da Camera’s program notes. “That’s one thing I learned from playing with people like Herbie Hancock – getting comfortable is dangerous. You get lazy. You should always get out of your comfort zone to create something beautiful.”
Got a chance to sit down with Jeff and talk some jazz. We discussed his history, the jazz scene here in Austin and his upcoming shows and recent achievements. Click "Read More" down below to see some links, YouTube clips, and upcoming shows including tomorrow's Thursday 7-10 Belmont show. Make sure to also check out our podcast section soon for upcoming tracks off Jeff's album.
My mic has been acting up lately and unfortunately the sound quality isn't the best. Jeff is kinda low but just turn up your volume and everything is gravy ;). I guess I'm gonna have to start sound-checking my interviews, haha
Justin Vasquez has been hard at work on his first CD for the past year, and now the time has come. His CD Release performance will be held tomorrow at Elephant Room. Justin is actually an old buddy of mine who sat in occasionally with my old group Siringo Pass. His playing his arguably without flaw; every note is distinct, full of flavor, yet he somehow manages to push a flurry of them through his horn in the shortest amount of time thinkable, while letting the right notes sing out when the moment is right. One of those rare players that's extremely technical without a loss of feeling, he also chooses caliber musicians that are right up there with him in musicianship, and that becomes pretty evident when you hear the communication between himself and his comrades during a live show. But don't take my word for it: see it for yourself tomorrow night.
Jeff Lofton continues to make airwaves and is now coming to The Belmont on Thursdays, from 7-10, starting this Thursday. Look for my interview with him later tonight!
My interview with Dr. James Polk, local jazz veteran! We talk about his view on the Austin Jazz scene, the differences between technical jazz and "feeling" the groove, the importance of listening to jazz music to improve on your instrument, and his new monthly Monday night series at the Monarch Event Center.
It goes without saying Austin's First Lady of Jazz, Pamela Hart is an amazing jazz vocalist and radio confirms it, the fans confirm it and Phil Driver believes it. Her current CD, titled May I Come In? has been a big hit all over the world. This past week Popular UK DJ, Phil Driver spun Pamela's Hit single, Ever Blue on his popular Soul Jazz Show with super duper reception.
