As some of you know, I used to play drums for an 8-piece funk band, Siringo Pass. We had a great time, but I was young and the partying side got the better of me. Then in 2006 I had my baby boy Tristan. I laid down my sticks, sold all my drum sets (except my first kit; I'm giving those to my son when he's old enough), and bought my first Digital Single Lens Reflex camera: a Nikon D70. I used it to chronicle my son's "firsts": his first steps, his first taste of chocolate, the first time I got to have him overnight to myself, etc. During that year I not only developed as a person, but I found that I had finally stumbled upon something that I truly loved: photography. I had never thought of it before, but it hit me like a ton of bricks! I had found a way to completely express myself, through bold, vibrant and captivating images.
Photography makes the world go round, in my opinion. Without photos we would not know much of anything. We wouldn't know what other countries look like, what other ethnic groups look like, what our history was, who are great-grandparents were. There would be no inspiration.
All this being said, as a photographer I will do my best to support and help grow the photography scene here in Austin.
Brenda Ladd is a truly amazing photography artist, with a dizzying array of portfolios in almost every genre that exists. I met her once, very briefly over at Elephant Room while checking out a local jazz artist (I fail to remember who it was). We exchanged cards and I checked out her website the next day. Her images are nothing short of a study in photographic composition, subject posing and lighting. If you EVER think of someone for your band press kit photos, or if you need some live shots, consider Brenda! She is beyond worth it and will add to your band's image.

On Tuesday, April 21st, The Belmont opened its arms and welcomed the dynamic Pamela Hart, Austin’s First Lady of Jazz, who accompanied by The Kris Kimura Quintet, was a vocal tour de force performing classics originally done by such greats as Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson. Pamela sang every song as if they were specifically grafted for her, complete with today’s modernisms. We were able to take in the grand performance from a table marked Reserved, in the center of the outdoor venue. The view, the weather and most importantly the sounds were, Perfect! Enjoying all this with wonderful family and friends added to the already amazing ambience.
The Belmont Classic American Restaurant & Bar made its appearance in Austin several years ago and has consistently contributed to the dining and entertainment experiences in a Grand Way. Guests are treated to a venue complete with a unique and stylish décor,

Bruce James is a local soul/funk piano player and his group never ceases to impress! He was good enough to play my last jazz fest back in September of '08 and was arguably the best show of the entire festival. He sent me advance word of his show at The Parish this last Thursday and I jumped at the chance to not only watch him play again, but to snap some photos.

The Austin Traditional Jazz Society (ATJS)is dedicated to the preservation and performance of Traditional Dixieland Jazz in Austin and Central Texas. ATJS sponsors a year-round schedule of live concerts featuring the area's established Dixieland bands. In recent years, the Society has sponsored concerts by the Jim Cullum Jazz Band of San Antonio, three appearances by the Ed Polcer Jazz All Stars from New York, and the Connie Jones' Jazz All Stars from New Orleans.
Membership is open to anyone who enjoys traditional Dixieland jazz. Membership dues entitle members to attend the regularly scheduled concerts and jam sessions, an E-mail subscription to The Austin Jazz Messenger, and discounted tickets to ATJS special jazz concerts.
For more information visit the ATJS website at www.atjs.org.

Austin - The Ron Westray/Thomas Heflin Jazz Project performs Friday, April 24, at 9:30 p.m. at the Elephant Room, 315 Congress Avenue. Both musicians are recording artists for Blue Canoe Records, the first all-digital jazz label (www.bluecanoerecords.com). His performance with Heflin (thomasheflin.com) will be recorded for an album to be released later on the Blue Canoe label. A second live performance at the Elephant Room on May 15 will also be recorded for the CD.
